For many visitors around the Midwest, Gurnee means a day out. The village is home to Six Flags Great America, which opened in 1976 as Marriott’s Great America, and to Gurnee Mills, a huge outlet mall that opened in 1991. Behind the attractions is a village of about 30,700 people (2020 census) on the banks of the Des Plaines River in Warren Township, Lake County. The settlement was first called Wentworth; it took its present name from Walter S. Gurnee, a former Chicago mayor and railroad director who agreed to build a station here.

Gurnee sits between Waukegan and the lakes of western Lake County, and Interstate 94, the Tri-State Tollway, runs straight through it. Grand Avenue (IL-132) is the main east–west street, linking the interstate, the theme park and the mall with Waukegan to the east.
