Zion began as an experiment. In 1901 the evangelist John Alexander Dowie founded the city as a religious community, named it after Mount Zion in Jerusalem, and at first owned the land and most of the businesses himself. For years his church was the only place of worship in town. That planned beginning still shows in the street grid, and the city has since grown into an ordinary, increasingly diverse Lake County community of about 24,700 people at the 2020 census. It lies roughly 40 miles north of Chicago, close to the Wisconsin state line, with Lake Michigan along its eastern edge.

The lakefront here is unusually wild for the Chicago region. Illinois Beach State Park stretches along more than six miles of shoreline, with dunes, wetlands, prairie and black oak savanna on a beach ridge plain that formed over thousands of years. North Point Marina, the largest marina in Illinois, sits at the park’s northern end.

Watching Zion’s roads

They are road cameras, aimed at intersections and corridors rather than scenery, and they cover the state routes that serve the city, including IL-131, IL-137 and IL-173. Zion keeps Central Time. Summer evenings give you light until about half past eight, while in midwinter it is dark soon after four thirty. Because the city hugs the lake, it can see conditions that inland towns miss: spring fog rolling ashore, sudden lake-enhanced snow in winter, and cool breezes on summer afternoons. Warm weekends in July and August bring more traffic toward the beach and the marina, which is easy to spot on the morning and evening views.
