Live cameras in Wheaton, United States

Wheaton is the county seat of DuPage County, a leafy western suburb of Chicago with about 54,000 residents (2020 census). Brothers Warren and Jesse Wheaton came from Connecticut in 1837 and claimed land at the center of today's town; the railroad depot took their name in 1848 and the village incorporated in 1859. In 1867 Wheaton narrowly beat Naperville in a vote to become the county seat, and the quarrel ended with the famous Midnight Raid, when Wheaton men carried county records away from the Naperville courthouse. The city is also home to Wheaton College and to Cantigny Park, the former estate of a Chicago Tribune publisher, with formal gardens and two museums.

Wheaton's own set of nearly 80 cameras comes through the Illinois DOT Gateway system, which brings together state, DuPage County and Illinois Tollway views as still images refreshed every few minutes. Look for Roosevelt Road (Illinois Route 38) and Butterfield Road (Illinois Route 56) through town, Illinois Route 59 to the west, and the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) and Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355) on the edges of the area, where the busiest suburban traffic flows. Below Wheaton's own views, the page adds cameras from Glen Ellyn, Carol Stream, Winfield, Warrenville and Lombard.

Wheaton keeps Central Time with daylight saving. On weekdays the tollways carry commuters toward Chicago in the morning and back out to the western suburbs by evening. Summer days are long, with sunset after 8:20 p.m. in June, while December sunsets come around 4:25 p.m., so winter evening commutes happen in the dark. Snowstorms between December and March are the best time to see how quickly the county and the tollway clear the roads, and summer thunderstorms can roll through in the late afternoon.

Nearby, the Illinois Prairie Path, one of the country's early rail trails, runs right through Wheaton on the old interurban line, and Metra's Union Pacific West line stops at both the downtown and College Avenue stations.
