North Chicago is a city of about 30,800 people in Lake County, Illinois, on the shore of Lake Michigan between Waukegan to the north and Lake Bluff to the south. Despite its name it is not part of Chicago but a separate city about 35 miles north of the Loop. Industry arrived in the 1890s after the railroads came through, and it was incorporated as a village in 1895 and became a city in 1909, drawing many immigrants from Eastern Europe to its factories. Its largest neighbor and employer is Naval Station Great Lakes, home of the Navy's only boot camp, where every enlisted sailor begins training; the base takes up much of the lakefront. North Chicago is also home to Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, which runs the Chicago Medical School. Today it is one of the most diverse places in Lake County, with Hispanic, white and African American residents in roughly similar numbers.

The state transportation department's Gateway system is the source of North Chicago's views. Interstate 94, the Tri-State Tollway, runs along the west side of the city, U.S. Route 41, the Skokie Highway, crosses it north to south, and Illinois Routes 43, 131 and 137 carry local traffic, with Route 137 leading toward the naval station. On Central Time, the city shifts an hour forward from spring until the first Sunday of November. Lake Michigan brings cool breezes in summer and lake-effect snow showers in winter, and the shore can be noticeably colder than inland towns in spring. In June the sun sets after half past eight; in December it sets around twenty past four. Graduation weeks at the boot camp bring families from across the country, and weekday shift changes at the base and nearby employers show up as busy traffic on the main routes.

Two Metra stations on the Union Pacific North line link the city to Chicago and Kenosha, and the beaches and harbor of Waukegan are just to the north.
