Live cameras in Westmont, United States

Westmont is a village of about 24,400 people in DuPage County, in Chicago's western suburbs. It sits between Oak Brook to the north, Clarendon Hills to the east, Darien to the south and Downers Grove to the west. The village grew from a railroad stop once known as Gregg's Milk Station on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy line, and it incorporated in 1921 after a close vote. Today Metra's BNSF Line still stops downtown, linking Westmont with Union Station in Chicago and with Aurora, and Ogden Avenue, part of U.S. Route 34, runs through the village as a long commercial strip known for its car dealerships.

The cameras listed for Westmont belong to the Illinois Department of Transportation and come through its Gateway traveler information system. They are still images that update every few minutes. Because the village is ringed by expressways, its cameras tend to look at the big roads around it: Interstate 88, the Reagan Memorial Tollway, passes to the north, Interstate 294 to the east and Interstate 355 to the west, with Interstate 55 a short way south. That makes this a useful place to judge how western suburban traffic is moving.

When to look

Westmont uses Central Time. Weekday mornings bring a steady flow toward Chicago and the office parks of Oak Brook, and the return trip peaks in the late afternoon. In winter a single snowstorm crossing the prairie can slow every route at once, and the tollway plows run around the clock. Short December days mean the evening peak happens after dark, while in June the light lasts until about half past eight.

• Weekday rush: interchanges near the tollways fill first.
• Holiday travel days: heavy flow toward the airports.

Close by, Oakbrook Center is a large open-air shopping mall, and the Morton Arboretum in Lisle offers woods and gardens a few miles to the northwest.
