El Cerrito is a small city on the east shore of San Francisco Bay, tucked into the southwestern corner of Contra Costa County between Albany and Richmond. Its name means the little hill in Spanish, a nod to nearby Albany Hill. The 2020 census counted about 26,000 residents. The town began as a camp for refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, was briefly called Rust after its first postmaster, and incorporated as El Cerrito in 1917. Bungalows fill the flatlands, while homes in the hills look out toward San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.
San Pablo Avenue is the main commercial street, and two BART stations, El Cerrito Plaza and El Cerrito del Norte, connect the city to Oakland and San Francisco. The Ohlone Greenway, a walking and cycling path under the elevated BART tracks, runs through town, and Wildcat Canyon Regional Park borders it on the east.
The I-80 corridor
All of these images come from Caltrans and its CWWP2 feed, the same pictures shown on QuickMap, and they update every few minutes as still shots. Interstate 80 runs along the western edge of El Cerrito, and Interstate 580 is close by, splitting off toward the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge. Because the map places each camera at its nearest town, this page gathers views from the busy I-80 corridor between Albany and Richmond, where morning traffic toward the Bay Bridge often slows to a crawl.
Image times are Pacific, matching the rest of the Bay Area. Its weather is mild and maritime: summer mornings can be foggy and breezy, early autumn is often the warmest stretch, and nearly all the rain falls between November and April. Weekday commute peaks come early here, and Friday afternoons are heavy with traffic leaving the Bay Area toward Sacramento and Lake Tahoe.
Close by, the Albany Bulb and the shoreline park along the bay are good places to walk, and the Berkeley campus is just a few miles south.
