Richmond is a city in western Contra Costa County, California, on the East Bay shore of San Francisco Bay, with about 116,000 residents at the 2020 census. It borders San Pablo, El Cerrito, Albany and Pinole. During the Second World War the four Kaiser shipyards here built 747 Liberty and Victory ships, more than any other site in the country, and the population jumped from about 23,000 to roughly 120,000 in five years. That story is told at the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park on the Marina Bay waterfront. Kaiser Permanente, now a national health system, grew out of the shipyard medical plan. Point Richmond, with its older homes and small downtown, sits next to the bay at the foot of the hills.
