Live cameras in Fontana, United States

Fontana is a large city in the Inland Empire region of San Bernardino County, California, about forty-six miles east of Los Angeles. Its 2020 population of about 208,000 puts it second in San Bernardino County, after the city of San Bernardino itself. Azariel Blanchard Miller founded it in the early 1900s, and the name means fountain in Italian. For years it was a farming town of citrus groves, vineyards and chicken ranches along U.S. Route 66, now Foothill Boulevard.

World War II changed everything. Henry J. Kaiser built a huge steel mill just outside town, one of only two steel plants west of the Mississippi at the time, and he also opened a medical center for the workers that grew into the Kaiser Permanente system. The mill is long gone, but Fontana kept its industrial character and is now a regional hub for trucking and warehouses. In the 1950s and 1960s it was also known for drag racing.

Three freeways, lots of trucks

These cameras are part of the Caltrans network and are taken from its CWWP2 feed, which also supplies QuickMap. They show still frames refreshed every few minutes. Interstate 10 and State Route 210 both cross Fontana from east to west, and Interstate 15 cuts diagonally across the northwestern corner of the city on its way to the Cajon Pass. Because of all the distribution centers nearby, the images usually show plenty of trucks, and they are a good way to see whether the freeways toward Los Angeles or Las Vegas are flowing.

Fontana's camera times are Pacific. Summers are hot, with many days in the high nineties or above, and the valley can hold smog on still afternoons. Santa Ana winds blow hard in fall and winter, sometimes forcing wind warnings for big rigs on I-15 and I-10. Weekend traffic toward the desert builds on Friday afternoons. December evenings get dark before five.

Rancho Cucamonga borders Fontana on the west and Rialto on the east, and the San Gabriel Mountains rise just to the north.
