What you are looking at
This research camera sits on the north rim of Mokuʻāweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on Earth. It looks south across the wide, flat caldera floor, with blocky lava along the rim in the foreground and the steep caldera walls on the right, at an elevation of roughly 4,000 m (13,000 feet). If you look carefully around early morning or late evening, HVO notes, a few thermal areas may be seen giving off steam.
Mauna Loa erupted in November and December 2022, its first eruption since 1984. That eruption began with fissures inside Mokuʻāweoweo before moving into the Northeast Rift Zone. Between eruptions the summit can stay quiet for years, so for the current status, check the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory's Mauna Loa page and its alert level.
Expect a new still roughly every five minutes. Because the summit sits above most clouds, the sky is often clear and deep blue, with a bright sun and lens flare at midday. Winter storms can dust the caldera with snow. Tip: low sun at dawn and dusk casts long shadows that reveal the caldera's fault scarps and old lava flows best.
