Albacete is the largest city of Castilla-La Mancha and capital of the province of the same name, set on a wide, open plain known as Los Llanos in southeastern Spain. Its Arabic name meant the flat one, and the landscape still matches it: fields of grain and vineyards stretch to the horizon in almost every direction. The city sits roughly halfway between Madrid and the Mediterranean, which made it a natural crossroads for roads and railways, and it now has a high-speed rail station and a small airport shared with an air base. About 174,000 people live in the municipality, one of the largest in Spain by area. Albacete has long been known for its knives and clasp knives, celebrated in a dedicated cutlery museum, and it served as headquarters of the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War.

What the cameras cover

Every camera on this page belongs to the DGT, Spain's national traffic directorate. Around Albacete they watch the motorways that converge on the city: the A-31, which links Madrid with Alicante, and the A-30 running south toward Murcia and Cartagena, plus junctions on the ring road. Because the map gives each camera its nearest named place, views from the open road a short distance outside town are grouped here as well. Each image is a still photo replaced every few minutes.

Summer weekends are when these roads matter most, as families from Madrid stream toward the beaches of Alicante and Murcia on Friday afternoons and return on Sunday nights. The climate is dry and continental: very hot summers, chilly winters with frequent frost and the occasional snowfall, and fog on still winter mornings. Spain observes Central European Time, an hour ahead of UTC in winter and two hours ahead in summer, which keeps the sky light until around 9:30 p.m. in June.

The great annual event is the Feria de Albacete, held each September from the 7th to the 17th and declared a fiesta of international tourist interest. The wetlands of the Lagunas de Ruidera and the canyon town of Alcalá del Júcar are both within an hour's drive.
