La Roda is a town of about 15,600 people in the north of Albacete province, Castilla-La Mancha, set in the dry, open farmland of La Mancha about forty kilometers northwest of the city of Albacete. Most Spaniards know the name for one thing: the miguelito, a small square of puff pastry filled with cream and dusted with sugar, which travelers have been buying at roadside shops here for decades. The old town is more than a pastry stop, though. It was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1973 for its Renaissance church of El Salvador, its stone mansions carved with coats of arms, and the house where Saint Teresa of Ávila is said to have stayed.
What the cameras show
The DGT, Spain's traffic directorate, operates the cameras on this page. La Roda lies on the A-31 motorway between Madrid and Alicante, and the old N-301 and the AP-36 toll road also cross the municipality. Because the map ties each camera to the closest named place, views from the long, straight stretches of these roads across the plain are listed here. Images are stills that refresh every few minutes.
These are holiday routes from Madrid to the Costa Blanca, so traffic is heaviest on Friday afternoons in summer, at Easter and around the August long weekend, and lighter on weekday mornings. La Mancha's climate is continental: summer afternoons are fierce, winter nights freeze, and fog can settle over the flat fields in December and January. Spain uses Central European Time, putting clocks forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October.
- Romería of the Virgen de los Remedios in May.
- Fiestas de El Salvador, a nine-day summer celebration in early August.
- Carnival and Holy Week, both recognized as regional tourist events.
Nearby, the castle-topped village of Alarcón and its reservoir lie to the north, and the Lagunas de Ruidera natural park is about an hour west across the plain.
