What you are looking at
The CLCL camera stands at about 350 m (1,160 feet) on Chuginadak Island, about 8 km (5 miles) northwest of Mount Cleveland, and looks southeast at the volcano. Cleveland's steep, dark cone fills most of the frame on clear days, streaked with snow in its gullies; with little foreground to distract, it is one of the most striking portraits of the volcano.
Mount Cleveland, in the remote Islands of Four Mountains, is one of the most active volcanoes in the Aleutians. Since 2001 it has had many short-lived explosions and repeated growth of small lava domes in its summit crater, and its ash clouds are a hazard to aircraft on routes across the North Pacific. Check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Cleveland page for the current alert level.
A fresh frame appears here about every ten minutes. Snow-covered winter views and the brown, ash-streaked cone of late summer look very different. Clouds often cap the summit. Tip: watch the snow on the upper cone; dark streaks or fresh gray staining can be signs of recent ash.
