What you are looking at
This visible-light camera at the CLNE site, about 330 m (1,080 feet) up on the northeast side of Mount Cleveland and roughly 2.4 km (1.5 miles) from the summit, looks southwest at the upper cone. On clear days, the frame is filled with the steep, snowy summit cone and its rocky flanks, sometimes with a small wisp of steam rising from the crater.
Cleveland, on uninhabited Chuginadak Island, is among the most active volcanoes in Alaska, with frequent small explosions and lava dome growth in its summit crater since 2001. Because the volcano sits under busy North Pacific flight routes, AVO watches it closely with cameras, satellites and infrasound sensors. For the current status and alert level, see the Alaska Volcano Observatory Cleveland page.
Expect a new still roughly every ten minutes. Sunset and sunrise can light the snow orange and pink, and long summer days give many chances to see the summit. Fog and rain are common, especially in summer. Tip: a thermal camera from the same site, the CLNE IR view, shows heat at the summit when this one is dark.
