What you are looking at
This CLCO camera sits on the eastern part of Chuginadak Island, about 15 km (10 miles) east of Mount Cleveland, and looks west-northwest across low tundra and a bay. Cleveland's snowy cone rises in the center of the frame, with a smaller, sharp snowy cone to the right on neighboring Carlisle Island, part of the Islands of Four Mountains group.
Cleveland is a frequently active stratovolcano, with small explosions and lava dome growth in its summit crater on and off since 2001. Because the islands are uninhabited and remote, AVO relies on cameras, satellites and a few instruments to watch for ash. Its alert level is posted on the Alaska Volcano Observatory Cleveland page.
The snapshot updates about every ten minutes. Late-day sun from the west can backlight the cones, while morning light falls directly on them. Clouds and fog are frequent; the best views tend to come on cold, calm days. Tip: if the summit is clear here but cloudy on closer cameras, this wider view is often the most useful.
