What you are looking at

The CLNE infrared camera sits on the northeast side of Mount Cleveland, at about 330 m (1,080 feet), roughly 2.4 km (1.5 miles) from the summit. It looks southwest at the upper cone, and instead of normal light it records heat, so the image appears in shades of gray: warm areas are bright, cold areas dark. In the frame, the cone is a pale shape against a mottled sky.

Thermal cameras are useful for watching volcanoes in the dark Aleutian winters and through light cloud, because hot ground, lava domes and fresh ash deposits stand out as bright spots. At Cleveland, which often has small explosions and lava dome growth in its summit crater, this camera helps AVO notice changes even when the visible camera shows nothing. The Alaska Volcano Observatory Cleveland page lists the current alert level.

The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every ten minutes. Sunshine warms the ground and can make the whole cone appear bright, so night images are often the most useful. Clouds and snow change the pattern too. Tip: open the visible camera from the same site side by side to compare what the eye sees with what the heat sensor sees.
