What you are looking at
The CLES camera, at about 145 m (480 feet) on Chuginadak Island, is only about 3 km (2 miles) east of Mount Cleveland's summit. It looks west straight up the volcano's upper cone, so the frame shows the steep slopes, snow-filled gullies and the rim of the summit crater against the sky, a close-up view where small changes are easy to spot.
Mount Cleveland often has steam rising from its summit crater, and during active periods small lava domes grow in the crater and are destroyed by explosions. Ash from these explosions can leave dark streaks on the snow that are visible on this camera. AVO uses images like this along with satellite and infrasound data to track activity. For the current status, check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Cleveland page.
New images arrive about every ten minutes. Morning sun lights this east-facing view best; by evening the cone is in shadow. Raindrops and wet snow on the lens are common in Aleutian weather. Tip: compare with the infrared CLNE camera, which can see heat at the summit even when light is low.
