What you are looking at
This Cascades Volcano Observatory camera sits at a high ridgetop station called WATCH, at about 1,460 m (4,800 feet), in the mountains between Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens. This view points southeast toward Mount Adams, roughly 56 km (35 miles) away, so the volcano appears as a broad snowy summit low on the horizon, framed by forested ridges and, close to the lens, weathered boards of the station's lookout structure.
Mount Adams is one of the largest volcanoes in the Cascades by volume, a broad stratovolcano that last erupted roughly a thousand years ago but still has active hydrothermal areas and is prone to large landslides from its weakened summit. The same station also has cameras facing Rainier and St. Helens, letting CVO watch three volcanoes from one hilltop. Check the CVO Mount Adams page for its current alert level.
A fresh frame appears here about every ten minutes. Clear fall and summer mornings give the sharpest view of Adams; valley fog sometimes fills the low ground in between, and winter storms can hide the mountain for days. Tip: if the foreground looks blurred, snow, rain or frost on the lens is the usual cause, and it often clears by afternoon.
