What you are looking at
From the WATCH station, a ridgetop site at about 1,460 m (4,800 feet) south of Mount Rainier, this camera looks north-northeast toward the mountain, roughly 36 km (22 miles) away. Rainier's snowy summit rises above several layers of forested ridges, with dead snag trees, a rocky slope and part of an old wooden structure in the foreground, so the scene feels like the view from a fire lookout.
Mount Rainier is an active stratovolcano and the highest peak in the Cascade Range. It has not erupted in historical times, but it has frequent small earthquakes and steam vents in its summit craters, and its glaciers and altered rock make lahars the main hazard for surrounding valleys. Check the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory Mount Rainier page for the current alert level.
The image here refreshes about every ten minutes. Clear mornings give crisp views of the south-side glaciers; summer afternoons may bring clouds, and smoke from wildfires can dim the scene in late summer. Winter snow covers the foreground. Tip: this station also has cameras pointed at Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens, so you can check all three from the same ridge.
