Mason City is the county seat of Cerro Gordo County in north-central Iowa, roughly halfway between Des Moines and Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The city counted roughly 27,000 residents in 2020. The city inspired River City in The Music Man, the musical by native son Meredith Willson, and Music Man Square keeps his boyhood home and a museum. Mason City also holds a remarkable collection of Prairie School architecture, especially in the Rock Crest-Rock Glen Historic District, along with Frank Lloyd Wright's Stockman House and the Historic Park Inn Hotel, the last Wright-designed hotel still standing. Willow Creek and the Winnebago River wind through town.
