Des Moines is the capital and largest city of Iowa, built where the Raccoon River flows into the Des Moines River in the middle of the state. The 2020 census counted about 214,000 residents in the city and roughly three quarters of a million across the metro area. It began as Fort Des Moines in 1843 and became the state capital in 1857. Coal mining once drove the economy; today insurance and finance do, which is why the city is sometimes called the Hartford of the West. The gold-domed State Capitol rises on a hill east of the river, and every four years the city draws national attention as the hub of the Iowa caucuses. Each August the Iowa State Fair fills the fairgrounds on the east side.
Interstates 35 and 80 share a long stretch of road around the north and west sides of the metro, and Interstate 235 cuts straight through the middle of the city, close to downtown and the capitol.

The views here come from the Iowa Department of Transportation, which runs both traffic cameras on urban freeways and road-weather cameras along rural highways. They are refreshed images rather than live video. In the Des Moines area they mostly look along the interstates and major interchanges, letting you see congestion, crashes and, in winter, how much snow is on the lanes.

Summers are hot and humid, and thunderstorms roll through on many evenings. Rush hours on I-235 peak around eight in the morning and five in the afternoon, and the days around the State Fair bring extra traffic on the east side.
