Out on the prairie of west-central Illinois, about 45 miles northwest of Peoria, Galesburg grew up around the railroad and never quite let it go. The Knox County seat counted about 30,000 people in the 2020 Census. Presbyterian minister George Washington Gale founded it in 1837 with abolitionist settlers, and it became a stop on the Underground Railroad. Knox College, a private liberal arts school, anchors the older east side, and the fifth Lincoln–Douglas debate was held on its grounds in October 1858. Poet Carl Sandburg was born here; his childhood cottage and grave are kept as a state historic site.

Trains still shape daily life. BNSF runs a large hump yard south of town, and Amtrak stops several times a day, including the California Zephyr and Southwest Chief. The roads that feed the city are Interstate 74 on its eastern edge, US 34 and US 150, plus Illinois routes 41, 97 and 164.

The fourth weekend of June is Railroad Days, when downtown fills with a carnival, model train shows and BNSF yard tours, so local streets get busier than usual.
