Macomb is the county seat of McDonough County in west-central Illinois, a college town of about 15,000 people set among the cornfields roughly 75 miles southwest of Peoria. It was settled in 1829, became the county seat in 1830 and was named for Alexander Macomb, a general of the War of 1812. The Northern Cross Railroad arrived in 1855 and the town grew around its courthouse square. Western Illinois University, founded in 1899, is the largest presence in town, and its students give Macomb its rhythm. Macomb is also the birthplace of Lizzie Magie, who invented the game that became Monopoly, and in 2024 the town honored her with Macombopoly, described as the world's largest Monopoly board.

Macomb follows Central Time, with daylight saving from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. Summers are warm and humid with thunderstorms, and summer evenings stay light until after half past eight. In December the sun sets around twenty to five, and winter can bring ice storms as well as snow. The town is busiest when the university is in session, especially on move-in weekend in August and on football Saturdays, and quietest over the summer break. Amtrak trains between Chicago and Quincy stop at the Macomb station.

Argyle Lake State Park lies a few miles west near Colchester, and the Illinois River towns of Havana and Beardstown are about an hour to the east and south.
