Ankeny is a city in Polk County, Iowa, directly north of Des Moines, and one of the fastest-growing places in the state. The 2020 census counted about 68,000 residents, and recent estimates put it well above that, making it Iowa's fifth-largest city. John Fletcher Ankeny laid out the town in 1875 on farmland bought for $1,600; for decades it was a quiet farm town, until a wartime ordnance plant arrived in the 1940s and later became John Deere's Des Moines Works. Today it is home to the main campus of Des Moines Area Community College, Faith Baptist Bible College and about sixty parks, including the busy Prairie Ridge sports complex. The paved High Trestle Trail begins here and runs northwest across farm country to its famous lit bridge over the Des Moines River.
