West Des Moines is the largest suburb of Iowa's capital and the third most populous city in the Des Moines metro, with about 68,700 residents at the 2020 census. Most of it lies in Polk County, but the city also reaches into Dallas, Warren and Madison counties as it keeps growing west across the prairie. It began as Valley Junction, a railroad town incorporated in 1893; on January 1, 1938, residents dropped that name for West Des Moines in hopes of attracting new industry. The old railroad district survives as Historic Valley Junction, with antique shops, restaurants and a popular summer farmers market. Today the city is a business center too: the grocery chain Hy-Vee has its headquarters here, Wells Fargo runs large operations, and Microsoft has built several data centers. Jordan Creek Town Center, opened in 2004, anchors the western side. Olympic gymnasts Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas and basketball star Caitlin Clark all grew up or trained here.
Interstates on the west side
Iowa DOT supplies these views; besides ordinary traffic cameras, the agency keeps road-weather stations that photograph pavement for its plow crews. Interstates 35 and 80 share a route along the west and north sides of the city, and Interstate 235 cuts east toward downtown Des Moines, meeting them at a large interchange in West Des Moines. With every camera filed under the closest town, this suburb collects much of the interstate coverage on the metro's west side. The frames are renewed on a cycle rather than streamed.
