What you are looking at

This is a very long-distance view: from a monitoring station near Paul Peak on the northwest side of Mount Rainier, the camera points north toward Mount Baker, about 200 km (125 miles) away near the Canadian border. On the clearest days Baker appears as a pale snowy summit above a long blue ridgeline, with its south-side glaciers, including the Easton Glacier, facing the camera. The map pin marks the camera, not the volcano.

Mount Baker is the northernmost of the major US Cascade volcanoes. Its Sherman Crater, just south of the summit, has given off steam for many decades and became much more active in 1975, prompting close monitoring. Baker is heavily glaciated, so mudflows are its main hazard. For current information, see the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory page for Mount Baker.

The snapshot updates about every ten minutes. Over this distance, haze, wildfire smoke and the curvature of the land often hide the mountain completely; crisp days after a cold front give the best chance. The foreground forest stays visible in almost any weather. Tip: try early morning, when the air is cooler and steadier, for the best chance of seeing Baker sharply.
