What you are looking at

This is the widest view from the monitoring station near Paul Peak: the camera looks east-southeast across forested foothills to the whole snowy massif of Mount Rainier, about 26 km (16 miles) away, with the Puyallup River drainage leading toward it. Rainier's summit rises above a long sweep of ridges and managed forest, and on clear days you can trace the glaciers that feed the river below.

The Puyallup River system collects meltwater and sediment from several of Rainier's west-side glaciers, and it is one of the main paths that large lahars have followed in the past, including the Electron Mudflow about 500 years ago. Pierce County and the USGS run lahar detection and warning systems in these valleys. The CVO Mount Rainier page lists the current alert level.

A fresh frame appears here about every ten minutes. Dawn often paints the summit pink and gold, while summer afternoons bring clouds over the peak. In winter, snow levels drop into the foothills, and atmospheric rivers can hide everything for days. Tip: this is the best camera from this station for simply seeing whether Rainier is "out" today.
