What you are looking at

Pointing southeast from the station near Paul Peak, this camera watches the Puyallup River valley on the west side of Mount Rainier. Instead of the mountain, the frame shows a broad, forested valley floor framed by steep slopes, logging roads and clear-cut patches, the corridor through which meltwater and any future lahar from Rainier's west-side glaciers would flow toward the lowlands.

The Puyallup River heads at the Puyallup and Tahoma glaciers and flows past Orting and Puyallup to Commencement Bay at Tacoma. Geologists have traced several large lahars down this valley in the last few thousand years, which is why it is watched by cameras, flow sensors and warning sirens. For current information about the volcano, see the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory Mount Rainier page.

The snapshot updates about every ten minutes. Look for morning fog in the valley bottom, fresh snow on the ridgelines in winter, and gold and orange leaves along the river in fall. Night frames are dark. Tip: changes in the river channel, like new gravel bars or fresh debris, are easiest to spot by comparing clear midday images taken weeks apart.
