What you are looking at
This zoomed camera from the station near Paul Peak looks at the Tahoma headwall on the west side of Mount Rainier, where the Tahoma Glacier begins high on the mountain below the summit dome. The frame is filled with a broad snow and ice cap broken by dark, layered rock cliffs and steep icefalls, a close look at the part of the volcano where weakened, altered rock and heavy ice sit above a deep valley.
Rainier's west side includes the Sunset Amphitheater and the source areas of the Tahoma and Puyallup glaciers. Landslides of hydrothermally altered rock from this flank have started lahars in the past, which makes it a key area for USGS monitoring alongside the valleys below. The Cascades Volcano Observatory posts Rainier's current alert level on its website.
New images arrive about every ten minutes. Low sun in the morning and late afternoon brings out the texture of the cliffs and crevasses; midsummer shows the most bare ice and rock. Summit clouds, called lenticulars, sometimes form here before storms. Tip: compare it with the Mowich Face camera from the same station to see two very different sides of Rainier's upper cone.
