What you are looking at
This telephoto view zooms in on the Mowich Face, the steep northwest face of Mount Rainier, from a monitoring station near Paul Peak about 26 km (16 miles) west-northwest of the summit. The frame is filled with dark rock ribs, hanging ice and snowfields leading up to the summit dome, so you can follow changes in snow cover and glacier ice through the seasons in remarkable detail.
Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous United States and is considered one of the most hazardous volcanoes in the country because of lahars, fast volcanic mudflows that can travel down river valleys into populated lowlands. Cameras from this station watch several of those valleys as well as the mountain itself. See the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory Mount Rainier page for the current alert level.
The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every ten minutes. Early morning brings warm light across the face; by afternoon, clouds often cap the summit. Rockfall scars and fresh avalanche debris are easiest to spot after warm spells. Tip: because it is zoomed so far, even thin haze or wildfire smoke can wash this view out while the wider cameras still look clear.
