Langford is a city on southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, in the Western Communities, often called the West Shore, of Greater Victoria. It acts as the urban core of the five West Shore municipalities, and it has grown faster than almost anywhere else in the province: the 2021 census counted about 46,600 residents, nearly a third more than five years earlier. Much of that growth fills the valley around Langford Lake and new hillside neighborhoods such as Westhills, with shopping centers along the main roads.
Sport and outdoors are a big part of local life. Starlight Stadium is home to Rugby Canada's national training center, Bear Mountain has a golf resort and mountain bike trails, and Langford, Glen and Florence lakes are popular for swimming in summer. Goldstream Provincial Park, just to the north, is famous for its autumn chum salmon run and the bald eagles that gather there in winter.
The Malahat and the Sooke road
The cameras listed here come from DriveBC, the province's road information service, and send still images every few minutes. Langford is where the Trans-Canada Highway, Highway 1, leaves the Victoria area and climbs over the Malahat toward Duncan and Nanaimo, and it is also crossed by Highway 14, which runs west to Sooke. The Malahat section is narrow and winding and can close after crashes or snowfall, so these views are worth checking before a trip up-island, especially on winter mornings.
Vancouver Island keeps Pacific Time, and Langford's clocks change in March and November. The climate is mild and rainy in winter and dry in summer, though inland Langford is a little warmer in July and a little snowier in winter than the waterfront of Victoria. Midsummer sunsets come close to half past nine, while December days end a little after four.
Colwood and View Royal border Langford to the south and east, and downtown Victoria is about a twenty-minute drive away when traffic is light.
