Pitt Meadows is a small city on the north side of the Fraser River, wedged between the Pitt River on the west and Maple Ridge on the east, in the eastern part of Metro Vancouver. About 19,000 people lived here at the 2021 census. Much of the land is low, flat farmland protected by some 64 kilometers of dikes, and cranberry and blueberry fields cover large areas, turning deep red at the autumn cranberry harvest. Pitt Meadows was incorporated in 1914 and became a city in 2007; its museum occupies a restored general store from the 1880s. To the north, the Pitt River leads up to Pitt Lake, often described as the largest freshwater tidal lake in the world.
The DriveBC traffic cameras attached to Pitt Meadows watch some of the region's busiest suburban roads. The Lougheed Highway (Highway 7) crosses the city from the Pitt River Bridge, rebuilt in 2009, toward Maple Ridge, and the Golden Ears Bridge, opened the same year, carries traffic south over the Fraser to Langley. Morning and evening commutes over these two crossings are when the images are most telling. Like other provincial road cameras, they deliver snapshots, renewed every few minutes.
The city follows British Columbia's permanent clock of UTC minus seven, in force since 2026, so winter sunrise arrives after nine and summer sunset after nine. Fog can settle over the fields on calm autumn and winter mornings, and the open farmland feels the cold outflow winds that sometimes blow down the Pitt valley in winter. Light planes from Pitt Meadows Regional Airport, in service since 1963, are a common sight overhead.
For a quiet outing, the dike trails and Grant Narrows Regional Park at the south end of Pitt Lake are good for canoeing and birdwatching, and Port Coquitlam is just across the Pitt River.
