Sooke is a district municipality on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, about 38 kilometers by road west of Victoria and part of the Capital Regional District. The 2021 census counted about 15,100 residents. The town wraps around the north shore of the sheltered Sooke Basin and Sooke Harbour, looking out across the Strait of Juan de Fuca toward the Olympic Mountains of Washington State. It began as a fishing and logging community and has grown quickly as a residential area for people who work in Greater Victoria. Sooke incorporated as a municipality in 1999, and its climate is one of the mildest in Canada.

What the cameras show

The cameras listed here are DriveBC highway cameras from the BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit, posting still pictures every few minutes. Highway 14, the West Coast Road, is the only main road in and out of Sooke: east toward Langford and Victoria, and west along the coast toward Jordan River and Port Renfrew. Because there are few alternatives, a collision or a fallen tree can close the route, and the camera views are a fast way to see whether traffic is moving.

This autumn British Columbia stops turning its clocks back: from November 1, 2026, it stays on UTC minus seven all year. Summer evenings remain bright until about half past nine, while sunrise near the winter solstice now comes after nine. Most of the rain falls between October and March, and Pacific storms can bring strong winds along the coast.

  • The Sooke Potholes, rock pools carved by the Sooke River, are a favorite summer swimming spot.
  • The Galloping Goose Regional Trail links Sooke with Victoria for cyclists and walkers.

East Sooke Regional Park protects rugged coastline across the basin, and farther west the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail begins near China Beach. The Sooke Fall Fair, first held in 1913, takes place every Labour Day weekend.
