Whistler is a mountain resort town in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, about 125 kilometers north of Vancouver. The village sits at about 670 meters above sea level in a valley of lakes, beneath the two mountains of Whistler Blackcomb, one of the largest ski areas in North America. It is a resort municipality, with about 14,000 permanent residents in 2021 and many more visitors in peak seasons. Whistler hosted the alpine skiing and sliding events of the 2010 Winter Olympics. In summer the same slopes turn into a well-known mountain bike park, and hiking, golf and lake swimming take over. The name is said to come from the whistling call of the hoary marmot.
What the cameras show
The cameras grouped here come from DriveBC, the provincial road information service. They are still images refreshed every few minutes, and around Whistler they focus on Highway 99, the Sea-to-Sky Highway, which climbs from Horseshoe Bay along Howe Sound through Squamish to the resort and on toward Pemberton. Some are traffic cameras near the village; others are road-weather views at higher points, where snow, slush and fog can change conditions quickly. They are a practical check before driving up for a ski day or heading home on a Sunday.
Whistler is on Pacific Time. The valley gets about four meters of snow in an average winter, and the ski season usually runs from late November into spring, so the winter views can show heavy snowfall, plowed lanes and chain-up conditions. Highway 99 is busiest northbound on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings and southbound on Sunday afternoons, particularly on holiday weekends. In midwinter the sun sets around half past four, while June evenings stay light past nine.
For a nearby look, Squamish and the Sea to Sky Gondola sit about an hour south on the same highway, and the farming valley of Pemberton is about half an hour north.
