Aurora is a city on the Fox River in northeastern Illinois, about forty miles west of downtown Chicago, and it spreads across parts of Kane, DuPage, Kendall and Will counties. Its 2020 census count of roughly 181,000 makes it the state's second-largest city, behind only Chicago. Founded in 1834 by the McCarty brothers, who built a sawmill on the river, it earned the nickname City of Lights because in 1881 it became one of the first American cities to light its streets entirely with electricity. Downtown sits on both banks and on Stolp Island in the middle of the river, home to the restored Paramount Theatre and the Hollywood Casino, and the Leland Tower was once the tallest building in Illinois outside Chicago.
Tollway and Route 59 views
Aurora's pictures are pulled from IDOT's Gateway service, which turns roadside cameras across northern Illinois into a set of regularly updated snapshots. Interstate 88, the Reagan Memorial Tollway, runs along the city's north side toward Chicago and Naperville, and Illinois Route 59 is a busy north-south road on the east side. LiveLocation links each camera to the nearest place, so the page collects IDOT views from the highways and junctions in and around this large and spread-out city, including some on its edges in neighboring towns.
Aurora's clocks match Chicago's. Weekday mornings bring heavy traffic toward Chicago and the eastern suburbs on I-88 and Route 59, and late afternoons the flow reverses. Metra trains run from downtown Aurora to Union Station, and park-and-ride traffic around the station shows the same rhythm. Winter brings snowstorms from December to March; summers are warm and humid with thunderstorms. Around midsummer the sun sets near half past eight, while in December it goes down before half past four, so winter evening views are mainly headlights.
Naperville lies right next door to the east, the Fox River Trail follows the river north toward Batavia and Geneva, and Phillips Park in the city's southeast has a free zoo and gardens.
