Elgin is a city on the Fox River about thirty-five miles northwest of Chicago, spread across Kane and Cook counties. Roughly 115,000 people called it home in 2020, enough to rank Elgin among the larger cities of the state outside Chicago. James and Hezekiah Gifford founded it in 1835 at a spot where the river could be bridged on the stagecoach road to Galena, and named it after a Scottish hymn tune. Dairy came first, then the Elgin National Watch Company, which for decades ran the largest watchmaking complex in the world. The clocks at Chicago's Union Station still carry the Elgin name.

Today the downtown sits on both banks of the river, with the Grand Victoria Casino, the Gail Borden Public Library and the Hemmens Cultural Center close to the water, and a string of historic neighborhoods climbing the bluffs on either side.
