Kankakee is the county seat of Kankakee County, Illinois, on the Kankakee River about sixty miles south of downtown Chicago. About 24,000 people lived in the city at the 2020 census, and it anchors a small metro area with its northern neighbors Bradley and Bourbonnais. Kankakee was founded in 1854 as the Illinois Central Railroad pushed south, and its name likely comes from a Miami-Illinois word for open, exposed country. The Riverview neighborhood holds two houses by Frank Lloyd Wright, among them the B. Harley Bradley House, an early Prairie-style home, and the neoclassical Kankakee County Courthouse was designed by an architect who had worked alongside Wright.
