Newton is the county seat of Jasper County, a central Iowa city about thirty miles east of Des Moines along Interstate 80. Founded in 1846 and named for two Revolutionary War soldiers, it grew through the twentieth century as the home of the Maytag washing machine company. When the Maytag plant closed in 2007, the city worked hard to bring in new employers, including wind energy manufacturing. Its population at the 2020 census was about 15,800. Its 1911 courthouse anchors a classic Midwestern square, and Maytag Dairy Farms, just outside town, still makes a well-known blue cheese.
Newton is also a racing town. Iowa Speedway, a seven-eighths-mile oval beside Interstate 80, hosts NASCAR and IndyCar events, and race weekends bring crowds far larger than the city itself.
