Washington is a small city in Tazewell County, Illinois, sitting on the prairie just northeast of East Peoria and inside the Peoria metropolitan area. Settlers arrived in 1825, the village was laid out as Holland's Grove in 1833 and took the name Washington in 1837. The 2020 census counted about 16,000 residents, a number that has grown steadily as families moved out from Peoria. The old town square, with its brick storefronts and the Denhart Bank Building, is still the center of local life, and Five Points Washington brings the library, pools and a performing arts space under one roof.

Many people outside Illinois first heard the name on November 17, 2013, when an EF4 tornado tore through neighborhoods on the west and north sides of town. Rebuilding took years, and the city that stands today is a mix of historic streets and newer homes.
