Champaign is a city in Champaign County in east-central Illinois, about 135 miles south of Chicago, with about 88,000 residents at the 2020 census. It grew up after 1855 around a stop on the Illinois Central Railroad, west of the older town of Urbana, and was first known as West Urbana before taking its present name in 1860. The two cities now share the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, whose campus sits across their border, and together they are often called Champaign-Urbana or simply C-U. Memorial Stadium, opened in 1923, and the State Farm Center host Fighting Illini sports, and the 1921 Virginia Theatre downtown is home to Ebertfest, the film festival founded by the late critic Roger Ebert, a native of Urbana.

Three interstates, one crossroads

These cameras are Illinois Department of Transportation views shared through its Gateway traveler information system, which publishes still images that refresh every few minutes. Champaign is a crossroads of three interstates: Interstate 57 runs north-south on the west side of the city toward Chicago and Memphis, Interstate 74 crosses the north side between Peoria and Indianapolis, and Interstate 72 begins here and heads west toward Decatur and Springfield. LiveLocation matches each camera to the closest place, so the interchanges around the city show up on this page.

Champaign uses Central Time, like Chicago two hours to the north. The flat prairie around the city means wind and blowing snow can make winter driving hard, so the camera images help on stormy days. Traffic peaks when students arrive and leave at the start and end of semesters, and on fall football Saturdays when fans come for games at Memorial Stadium. Summer evenings on the Quad stay bright until about half past eight, but by the end of fall semester it is dark soon after half past four. Spring brings the Illinois Marathon in April, and Ebertfest also takes place in spring.

Urbana adjoins Champaign to the east, the Amtrak trains stop at Illinois Terminal downtown, and Willard Airport lies to the southwest near Savoy.
