Decatur is the county seat of Macon County in central Illinois, set on the Sangamon River where a dam forms Lake Decatur, a long reservoir that curls around the south and east sides of town. It lies roughly forty miles east of Springfield and was home to about 70,500 people at the 2020 census. Grain processing shaped the place: Archer Daniels Midland and the old A. E. Staley works turned corn and soybeans into food and industrial products, which is why Decatur once called itself the Soybean Capital of the World. Caterpillar builds heavy mining equipment here too. Sports fans may know that the Chicago Bears began life in 1919 as the Decatur Staleys, a company team.
Its cameras come from the Illinois Department of Transportation through the Gateway traveler information system. They are road views, not scenic ones, and the images refresh every few minutes rather than streaming. Interstate 72 crosses the north side of the city, U.S. Route 51 runs north and south through it, and U.S. Route 36 heads east toward Tuscola, so expect wide prairie roads, interchanges, grain trucks and the occasional slow farm machine during harvest.
When to look
Decatur keeps Central Time and switches to daylight saving time in March. Summer evenings stay bright until after eight, while in December the sun sets around half past four, so late-afternoon views in winter turn to headlights quickly. Snow squalls and freezing drizzle sweep across the flat farmland several times each winter, and spring brings thunderstorms that can roll in fast from the west. In odd-numbered years the Farm Progress Show, one of the largest outdoor farm shows in the country, fills the Progress City grounds on the east edge of town in late August, and the roads around it get busy.
- Harvest season, September to November: trucks headed for the processing plants.
- Winter mornings: a quick check of pavement conditions.
Nearby, the Lincoln Trail State Memorial marks the spot where the young Abraham Lincoln and his family first settled in Illinois, just west of the city.
