Two rivers meet at Ottawa: the Fox flows down from the north and joins the Illinois right beside downtown. The city is the county seat of LaSalle County and had about 18,800 residents at the 2020 Census. Its place in history comes from August 21, 1858, when Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held the first of their seven debates in what is now Washington Square Park. Silica sand and glassmaking built much of the local economy, and William D. Boyce, who incorporated the Boy Scouts of America in 1910, called Ottawa home.
