Highland Park is a leafy lakeshore city on Chicago's North Shore, in Lake County about twenty-five miles north of the Loop. A tall bluff, roughly a hundred feet high, runs along about six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline here, cut by wooded ravines that lead down to the beaches. The city was chartered in 1869 and today has about 30,000 residents according to the 2020 census. It is known for its architecture, including several houses by Frank Lloyd Wright, and above all for Ravinia, the open-air music festival that has been the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1936. Concerts run from late spring through September, and on show nights the trains and roads near the park fill with picnickers.

U.S. Route 41 is the main highway through town, and the Edens Expressway and the Tri-State Tollway come together a few miles southwest at the Edens Spur. Metra's Union Pacific North Line stops at four stations within the city limits on its way between Chicago and Kenosha.
