Iowa City is the county seat of Johnson County in eastern Iowa, on the Iowa River about sixty miles west of the Quad Cities. About 75,000 people lived there at the 2020 census, and the University of Iowa, with roughly 31,000 students and one of the country's largest university hospitals, sets the rhythm of the town. Iowa City was the last capital of the Iowa Territory and the first capital of the state, until the government moved to Des Moines in 1857; the gold-domed Old Capitol still crowns the campus as a National Historic Landmark. The university's Writers' Workshop is famous among authors, and in 2008 UNESCO named Iowa City a City of Literature, the third in the world. The Pedestrian Mall downtown is the lively heart of the city.
